Lalonie Davis, 17 years old, is busy being a college student, an illustrator, and an up and coming beauty blogger focusing on body positivity and looking fierce and flawless. Last week, she proudly posted a photo of her armpit hair, a move extremely rare for women to embrace and display, as profiled by Strut.
Although Davis got a lot of love from her followers for what she had chosen to express, there were quite a few that responded with negativity.
She posted a couple of photos of her body hair on Twitter and wrote, “Body hair positivity post because I'd never let misogynistic opinions dictate what I do with my body.” Her tweet received almost 20,000 likes and 8,000 retweets.
Then, Davis continued the preach and praise of being proud of one’s own body in her Instagram account.
She said, “A body hair positivity post to remind you all that what I do with my body is MY choice. You don't have to like it, but please know that misogynistic opinions that shame girls for having body hair while ignoring boys who do will never get me to change who I am.”
Davis continued, “Baby girls don't ever let anyone ever make you feel bad for being who you are or doing what you want to do," Davis continued. "You are deserving of self-respect and love no matter the decisions you make with your body. Body hair is normal and so are you. It's okay to do what you want to do with your body. I love you guys."
Just when you thought that Davis’ statements about body hair was positive and innocent, a few people took offense of what she displayed. So, Davis made a collage of all the nasty tweets that she received and made another post.
Davis wrote, "Y'all think body hair on girls is gross, I think misogyny is grosser. Why can't I do what I want to do w MY body w/o being told to kill myself? Within one hour of posting a picture of my body hair on twitter, I received over 200 negative quotes tweets.
“I had to turn my notifications off be a use my phone kept freezing. This just goes to show so much about our culture, why do y'all hate carefree woman so much?"
Although the progress of feminism may seem unseen or slow, Davis does have a lot of followers and supporters. Even celebrities like Emma Watson and Adele gave their thoughts about body hair, with Watson revealing that she doesn’t shave all of her pubic hair, while Adele said, “I'll have no man telling me to shave my fuckin' legs. Shave yours."
