There's one secret ingredient that's taking health blogs by storm--and everyone is adding it to their smoothies.

What is this secret ingredient? Drum roll please... Turmeric!

Generally, there are two reactions to this news. One, what the heck is turmeric?! Second, doesn't turmeric taste horrible?!

No need to Google turmeric just yet--we have the answer for you right here. Turmeric is a root of the Curcuma longa plant and has a tough brown skin and a deep orange flesh. It has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger, and while it is best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry, it also gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color.

There has been a lot of research coming out that supports it's long-used medicinal purposes, and it's the perfect alternative to ginger. Turmeric, like ginger, has long been used as a powerful anti-inflammatory in both the Chinese and Indian systems of medicine, which can reduce bloating, swelling, and promote clearer skin. It's the perfect alternative because most people hate the taste of ginger but want the benefits.

Tumeric still has a pretty unique taste, still, but it's easy to coat that flavor (if you don't like it) with other fruits and veggies in your smoothie. Try some of these combinations inspired by health bloggers on Instagram, and you'll never bloat again!

1. Turmeric, banana, lime, ginger, pineapple, passion fruit, orange juice, goji berry, and chia seeds.

2. Turmeric, ginger, cardamom, mango, cinnamon, banana, orange juice, and oat milk.

3. Turmeric, pumpkin, chia seed, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, banana, and coconut.

4. Turmeric, cilantro, cucumber, celery, apple, ginger, and parsley

5. Turmeric, ginger, carrot, orange, fennel, apple, lemon, and pomelo

6. Turmeric, pineapple, lemon, and ginger

7. Turmeric, raw chocolate powder, black peppercorn, blackberries, banana, ginger, kale, cucumber, beetroot, cinnamon, lime, and water. (our personal favorite!)
