Going on a diet doesn’t always have to mean saying no to pizza and chocolate every time you go out. In fact, most nutritionists would agree that depriving yourself of your favorite foods almost never ends well.

The problem with eating these high-fat foods is that we tend to go overboard whenever they’re around.

Despite everything we know about good fats and bad fats, it’s never a good idea to consume too much fat.

While it’s important to control your fat intake, eating “low-fat” foods that taste like cardboard isn’t going to encourage you to stay on track.

Instead, try cutting the fat calories from your favorite foods using a few of these seamless tricks suggested by Men’s Health:

  1. Soften Your Butter: Ever notice how much butter you use when you take it out of the refrigerator? Well, you’d probably be able to cut that amount in half if you let the butter sit out and soften first. Another bonus—softened butter means no more ripped toast!
  2. Make Changes To Your Pizza: Most of the fat calories in pizza come directly from the generous amounts of mozzarella cheese on top. This is honestly way more cheese than you really need for it to taste good. Next time you order a pizza (or make your own), ask for double tomato sauce and light cheese. According to Men’s Health, cutting the cheese on your pizza by just one-third can save you up to 20 grams of fat!
  3. Order Steak Fries: It may surprise you to learn that thinner fries, including shoestring and curly fries, absorb more unhealthy oils than thicker steak fries. Save yourself some fat by ordering the biggest fries in the restaurant every time!

  4. Add Juice To Any Stir-Fry: Cut the fat from any chicken or beef stir-fry by adding a few spoonfuls of frozen orange-juice concentrate. This will add a tangy flavor to all your meats and veggies, without adding any extra fat! Men’s Health suggests throwing in some garlic to give your stir-fry a subtle kick.
  5. Cool Down Your Cans: High-fat canned foods, like gravies, soups, and a variety of meats, should always be stored in the refrigerator for a bit. Once they cool enough, the fat inside the can will rise to the top, so you can literally just scoop it out when you’re ready to cook.
