Everyone knows how awful it is to be cutting onions and have your eyes start to water and burn.

There are so many different tricks and secrets people swear by that are suppose to help, but some are more work than they are effective.

In reality, there is such a simple way to make your dinner preparation tear free, and it will actually do more than just keep your eyes from watering.

Courtenay from the blog, The Creek Line House, shared the trick with everyone, and we’re so glad she did!

“I’ve heard all kinds of old wives tales about how to stop yourself from crying when you’re cutting onions,” Courtenay wrote on her blog post about the secret. “Haven’t you? Do any of them really work? Not for me, they don’t.”

After realizing none of the little methods people come up with were going to help her completely enjoy her cooking experience every night, Courtenay discovered the one trick that did.

“The one trick that does work is really simple,” Courtenay wrote. “So, so simple.”

All it is is taking a candle, lighting it, and setting it as close as you can to the area where you’re chopping the onions without causing a fire hazard.

It is seriously that easy.

Courtenay explained that by setting the lit candle next to the chopping block, the flame will burn away the juices that onions release into the air when they’re chopped. This is what makes your eyes sting. But, nothing will reach your face if the fire gets to it first!

“I think it’s kinda like when you have a fireplace on and the air gets really dry because the fire burns all the moisture out of the air,” Courtenay wrote.

Not only will this keep you tear free during dinner time every night, but the candle will likely release a lovely smell that you can enjoy while the food is cooking.

Plus, what says relaxation more than a nice candle does?

“It’s amazing,” Courtenay wrote. “And it makes me happy. Or at least it makes me look happier when I’m cutting onions!”
