Finding out that you’re soon going to welcome a happy new addition to your family is an incredible feeling for any expecting couple.

It doesn’t take long before you start imagining the type of person your soon-to-be baby will become.

Who will they look like more? Will they want to be a doctor or a lawyer? Maybe an artist?

Every parent has these questions early on, even if they don’t want to admit it out loud.

That’s exactly how Imgur user 0tisdriftwood felt when he first learned that he and his wife were finally expecting their second child.

“We were going to grow our family by one more heart beat,” he wrote.

But something about their second pregnancy just didn’t sit well with his wife—everything felt different this time around.

She fell violently ill in a way that didn’t seem to be caused by the usual morning sickness or general fatigue of being a pregnant mom.

It was at the couple’s 11-week ultrasound that they finally discovered the truth: a molar pregnancy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a molar pregnancy occurs when the placenta grows into an abnormal cluster of cysts after the egg is fertilized.

His wife immediately had to undergo a DNC, or “dilation and curettage,” to get rid of the dangerous tumor.

The couple even had to prepare for the possibility of a hysterectomy, though, thankfully, it wasn’t necessary in this case.

While they’re still devastated that they won’t be welcoming a new bundle any time soon, this proud husband and father feels beyond fortunate to have his wife and son.

“Though we didn’t get to add to our family, I am so thankful for the amazing wife and son that I currently have,” he wrote.
